March 2010
Having gained an agreement with City and Hackney Primary Care Trust, we have started preparing the site. We're receiving £123 from Capital Growth and have already dug the tree holes. Friends in Haringey were able to pass on some young beech whips and these have been planted as a hedge which will be kept pruned short - young beech leaves are edible, as are the nuts (although it take years before they start fruiting). We plan on having two planting days on April 10th and 13th ... fruit trees and vines are on order.
February 2010
We have an approval to start planning for this. We would like to plant about five fruit trees between the centre and Woodberry Down Children's Centre. We would also like to plant on the estate directly opposite, the benches on Springpark Drive.
Plan, with progress so far in capitals:
* talk to a gardener to come up with: a growing menu (range of plants that can be planted) THORNLESS, TOUGH, LOW LEVEL HERBS ALONG LOW PAVEMENT WALL, VINES ALONG WALL WITH CHILDREN'S CENTRE, STEP OVERS ALONG EDGE OF UNUSED PATH. 4 OR 5 FRUIT TREES. NEED TO CHECK SOIL DEPTH AND TOXICITY. SMALL TREES IN TUBS BY BENCHES OPPOSITE; ideas for using produce; maintenance calendar.
* consult stakeholders (about the growing menu, ways of using produce and whether they can take some responsibility for the maintenance calendar / sponsor a tree): John Scott practice staff; toy library staff; Woodberry Down Children's centre and Lilliput staff; Springpark Drive residents HAVE DELIVERED LEAFLETS TO BURTLEY CLOSE AND SPRINGPARK DRIVE - NO RESPONSES. KNOCKED ON SOME DOORS AND SPOKE TO FOUR RESIDENTS - SOME SUPPORT. HAVE MET WITH MATT FROM CHPCT AND SUE HAS BEEN TALKING TO STAFF AT HEALTH CENTRE
* get costings for chosen plants, approach nurseries (e.g. Hackney Marsh Community Nursery - http://www.clubplan.org/CMS/page.asp?org=2673&name=TNFGHomepage )
* finalise growing plan HAVE SITE PREPARATION DAY ON 27TH FEB AND PLAN TO PLANT AT END OF MARCH
* raise money - Woodland Trust, individual donation, tree sponsorship DOING APP TO WOODLAND TRUST
* buy plants
* publicise ALREADY ON CALENDAR
* organise volunteers and tools - BORROW FROM BTCV?
* grand planting (Feb/Mar 2010?)
